Indienne Garden

Indienne Garden

Quantity

Handmade from a true vintage Schumacher Crewel hand-embroidered fabric, circa 1970s, this tote is an exceptional example of one of the most collectible periods in American decorative textiles. Schumacher crewel fabrics from this era were produced in limited quantities and are prized for their dense embroidery, expressive color-work, and historical references to 18th-century Indienne designs.

Crewel embroidery traces its roots to England and colonial America, where wool yarn was stitched onto linen grounds to create richly dimensional florals and scrolling vines. By the 1970s, Schumacher revived this tradition with bold, archival-inspired patterns that blended historical motifs with the era’s confident scale and craftsmanship. Indienne Garden features hand-embroidered flowers and winding vines, each stitch adding texture and depth that simply cannot be replicated by printed fabrics.

Made using repurposed fabric, this tote is fully lined in Dupioni silk, double internal pocket, a magnetic snap and constructed for everyday use while preserving the integrity of a rare textile. Due to the labor-intensive nature of crewel embroidery and the scarcity of intact vintage yardage, fabric like this is increasingly difficult to source.
