Founded in 1889 by Frederic Schumacher, F. Schumacher & Co. became one of the most important names in American decorative textiles. The house supplied fabrics for the White House, the U.S. State Department, and some of the most significant residential interiors of the 20th century. Schumacher's archive spans bold chintzes, documentary toiles, hand-screen florals, and geometric prints produced in close collaboration with leading architects and interior designers across more than a century.
Indienne Garden is a 1970s Schumacher crewel - hand embroidered, not printed. Each motif was worked by hand in wool yarn onto cotton, a process that no mass production method can replicate and that Schumacher reserved for its most considered designs. The Indienne tradition — botanical and garden subjects rendered with the loose, layered character of Indian chintz — was one of the great recurring themes of mid-century American decorative textiles, and Schumacher produced some of its finest examples. A piece like this, surviving in usable condition fifty years later, is genuinely collectible.
